Preparing to delegate

We all realise that if we want to our businesses to grow we are going to need to delegate. We all also know the story of the executive who says he hasn't got time to delegate and anyway he can do the job faster than he can train someone and deal with all their problems.

Well I certainly can sympathise with that executive.

I've heard a solution - Procedures.

No you do not need to write a procedure now for everything. Open a directory on your PC and call it procedures. Now open a notepad document and make the index for your procedures file. The five tasks you would delegate to your next employee who will work 10 hours a week.

Next time you do one of those tasks open a document file and make a few notes about what you did and how you did it. The second time you do the job add a few more notes. From then on follow the instructions and make a few improvements. If you are anything like me after the third or fourth update you want to reorganise it a bit. Go on.

Then you'll have a procedure.

Keep on doing it noting particularly when you had problems or issues and how you fixed them.

What guidelines are you using?

That reminds me this morning I hit a problem printing some forms off the HMRC website. Excuse me a second. I've just added a issues section to the bottom of my procedure.

In a short while you will have not just a procedure but a training tool so you can delegate effectively and not have to run around after all your staffs problems.

Go on open that directory now and write your index.
